Phil Niekro wasn’t the first of the famed Niekro brothers to pass away. His brother, Joe, passed away in 2006. At that particular time, I was collecting autographs regularly. On a whim, I wrote a sympathy letter expressing what most of Major League Baseball was feeling about his brother’s loss. I also included cards of him that he could give to others. However, I got a thank you note and the cards I sent signed back personalized to me. I’ve always said it’s the thrill of the hunt to get autographs via the mail and eventually send them off to get certified. Many Hall of Famers has passed this past year, with each of their achievements. However, it’s not every day that you become known for throwing a knuckleball.
